More about the course

Prepare to enter the spotlight with this exciting and highly practical one-year Musical Theatre course. You will be trained to sing, dance and act, developing a broad range of performance skills, through the practice of west end musicals.

This HE certificate combines academic theory with the technical skills required for a successful career in the musical theatre industry. At Newcastle College University Centre, we offer comprehensive training classes in singing ensemble and solo performance, jazz, and tap dance, alongside choreography and staging musical theatre workshops to make sure you're just as comfortable taking centre stage as directing from offstage.

Learn from our highly experienced tutors and their expansive professional networks to cultivate a range of skills as you are guided through audition techniques that will give you the edge in your future career in musical theatre. You will also create a personal development portfolio to support your progression to our own FdA and BA (Hons) programmes or to other external programmes.

Entry requirements

48-64 UCAS points (from related Music and/or Performance/Production Arts subjects).

Once your application has been reviewed, you will be invited to attend an audition/interview at the University Centre (Details will follow through email from our Admissions Team).

If you are a current Newcastle College students and successfully meet the published Level 3 entry criteria in an appropriate subject[s], you will be guaranteed a place on this course.

Applicants are normally expected to have achieved grade 4 or higher in GCSE Maths and English or the Level 2 equivalent (i.e.. Functional Skills or Adult Literacy/Numeracy).

At Newcastle College University Centre, we welcome applications from students studying new T-Level qualifications.

Work Experience

As part of the CertHE programme, you will experience a range of in-house and industry-based projects led by tutors at the Performance Academy, as well as current practitioners from musical theatre's West End.

You will collaborate in a fully realised musical theatre production within the Peter Sarah Theatre.

Where can I progress?

On successful completion of this course, you will have a very strong foundation for future study, with direct entry onto the Level 5 FdA Musical Theatre degree at Newcastle College University Centre. Alternatively, you could apply for a specialist drama school or head directly into industry in a theatre or performance troupe.
