More about the course

This intensive one-year practical dance course is designed by professional dance practitioners to introduce you to a range of dance techniques, skills and knowledge to progress onto further training to become a performer, choreographer or teacher.

Through continuous technical training in contemporary, ballet, jazz and commercial techniques, as well as a series of creative and performance collaborative projects led by expert teachers, professional choreographers and external dance companies, you will be encouraged to explore a variety of dance processes and movement styles to become a versatile performer.

Underpinned with knowledge of the body, nutrition, composition and safe working practices, you will be given the opportunity to explore a variety of potential careers and further study pathways.

Successful completion of this course leads directly into the second year of our BA (Hons) Dance programme.

Entry requirements

48-64 UCAS points (from related Music and/or Performance/Production Arts subjects).

Once your application has been reviewed, you will be invited to attend an audition/interview at the University Centre (Details will follow through email from our Admissions Team).

If you are a current Newcastle College students and successfully meet the published Level 3 entry criteria in an appropriate subject[s], you will be guaranteed a place on this course.

Applicants are normally expected to have achieved grade 4 or higher in GCSE Maths and English or the Level 2 equivalent (i.e.. Functional Skills or Adult Literacy/Numeracy).

At Newcastle College University Centre, we welcome applications from students studying new T-Level qualifications.

Work Experience

Dance students benefit from a number of close working links with industry, including Northern Stage and Gosforth Civic Theatre as well as Dance City, Fertile Ground, Anthony LoGuidice, Pelican Theatre and Timeless Entertainment.

You will attend workshops and masterclasses from various performers and choreographers to help you gain experience.

Where can I progress?

Successful completion of the Certificate in Higher Education programme will provide the opportunity to progress on to the second year of the BA (Hons) Dance course at Newcastle College University Centre.

Alternatively, you can take your skills into the commercial or contemporary industry, working within performance, choreography, teaching or dance production.
