More about the course

This Honours Degree (BSc) in Applied Physical Education and Sports Coaching is ideal if you want to go into teaching within a sport setting or into sports coaching.

As a student on this Sports Coaching course, you will become an effective team player, develop your passion for physical education and sports coaching, as well as become even more committed to improving the health and fitness of young people.

This degree has been developed in response to recommendations from industry partners in the sector, such as the Newcastle United Foundation, to ensure you study a degree that is relevant to industry and what it needs. Within this degree, you will gain higher-level knowledge and cover topics including the psychology of sport and relevant concepts in teaching and learning.

Entry requirements

A pass or higher in Level 5 Foundation Degree, Diploma in Higher Education or HND (in a related Sport and Exercise and/or Health and Social Care subject).

Once your application has been reviewed, you may be invited to an interview at Newcastle College University Centre.

If you are a current Newcastle College University Centre student and successfully meet the published Level 5 entry criteria in an appropriate subject(s), you will be guaranteed a place on this course.

Applicants are normally expected to have achieved grade 4/C or higher in GCSE English and maths or the Level 2 equivalent (i.e. Functional Skills or Adult Literacy/Numeracy).

At Newcastle College University Centre, we welcome applications from students studying new T-Level qualifications.

Work Experience

You will undertake a work placement as part of the degree to gain real-work experience and gain professional skills. You will also benefit from guest speakers from the sector including sports psychologists, teachers and sport development officers, who will provide industry insight.

Where can I progress?

Once you complete your degree, you may decide to build on the knowledge you have gained at degree level and progress onto an appropriate Master's or PgCE. You may wish to go into industry and look for employment as a sports development officer, PE assistant or coaching officer.
